Wedding Wednesday :: Destination Wedding Spots

Happy Wednesday, Yall!  I’m so happy to announce that we have a new member on our team…well, sorta…technically she’s not new…Heather will be a guest writer on some of blogs, like this one!  Heather is a very talented freelance writer, who is very witty and entertaining; as well as, educational.  Since is it ‘Royal Wedding Week’ it seem appropriate to write about destination weddings!

The Best Destination Wedding Spots in the Southeast ::

Destination weddings are more than just a craze, they’re a movement! Brides everywhere are ditching the traditional and slipping on flip flops, grabbing their passports and heading for paradise – but what if you don’t have your heart set on a tropical beach wedding and the thought of the hassle and money these locations require makes your head spin? Here are a few suggestions for the most romantic, wedding-friendly destinations that aren’t too far from home…in fact, they’re all right here in the Southeastern US!

Charleston, South Carolina ::

The perennial favorite, Charleston’s reputation for being the romantic destination in the south is hard-earned. Brides love the multitude of classic venues, both outdoor and indoor, many of which feature old world charm and need little in the way of decoration. With arguably the most vibrant food scene in the south and literally hundreds of hotels to choose from, Charleston is a traditional Southern bride’s dream destination.

If you like Charleston, also consider…Savannah, Georgia or St. Augustine, Florida

Asheville, North Carolina ::

This eclectic mountain town has all the elements for a picturesque fall or winter wedding, and summer’s not bad, either! Venues in Asheville range from luxurious spas to downtown lofts and there’s plenty for guests to do over the wedding weekend including shopping and hiking. The mountainous backdrop Asheville provides lends a casual elegance to events here and don’t forget that the famous Biltmore House is within city limits and just might be the perfect setting for a castle wedding.

If you like Asheville, also consider…Boone, North Carolina or Dahlonega, Georgia

Charlottesville, Virginia ::

If the idea of rolling hills and white picket fences sounds perfectly charming, consider the college town of Charlottesville for your destination wedding. Old plantation homes and pristine horse farms dot the countryside of this decidedly rural spot and there are several five star restaurants in town to make catering a breeze – not to mention dozens of fine wineries. If you think history is romantic just consider that Charlottesville is home to Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s sprawling country estate.

If you like Charlottesville, also consider: Birmingham, Alabama or Lexington, Kentucky

St. Simons Island, Georgia ::

Who doesn’t love a beach wedding? St. Simons has long been the secret jewel of Georgia’s coast and the island has as much history as it has charm. Gourmet restaurants abound as do wooden signs and clapboard beach cottages making St.Simons a thoroughly non-beachy beach destination. Get married here beneath a canopy of Spanish moss or perhaps on a naturally deserted beach at sunset and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, explore nearby Cumberland Island where wild horses still roam and John F. Kennedy said his own private vows.

If you like St. Simons, also consider Beaufort, South Carolina and The Outer Banks of North Carolina

Destination weddings don’t have to be difficult or expensive and they can take place closer to home than you ever imagined! For the bride who longs for something different but familiar, considering beautiful destinations in the southeast is a smart decision. Don’t forget that planning a destination wedding doesn’t have to be hard but can sometimes be more complicated than an at-home ceremony, so consulting with a wedding coordinator is never a bad idea.
